Everybody needs a bit of motivation from time to time to keep doing what they are doing and to stick to the hard work.
However, we see many people today watching motivational speeches all over the internet and yet many of them don’t achieve anything.
So a question rises here, are motivational speeches useless?
Yes, they are useless most of the time. And I’ll tell you why if you stick around.
One thing to note however. This does not mean that you shouldn’t listen to motivational speeches at all, what it means is that you shouldn’t only rely on them for motivation because if you do, you might end up wasting your time.
Here are some reasons why motivational speeches are useless.
1 – You usually search for motivational speeches by yourself.
What do I mean by this? Well, when you watch a motivational speech, it’s not because you want to have fun, it’s because you may be feeling unmotivated and you’re in a desperate need for someone to encourage you to do something useful in your life.
Let me tell you something important, if you search for motivation from over the internet, you will never find it.
You may find some videos on YouTube that might get you motivated for a couple of hours (usually much less), but that motivation will fade away very quickly.
What happens next is that you watch those motivational videos on youtube again, and again, and again, till it becomes an addiction.
You’ll be repeating the same cycle. Watch a video, get excited and plan to conquer the world with the amount of motivation that you got from watching motivational speeches, and after a few hours, it’s all gone and you’re back to the real world.
The more you repeat the cycle, the more time you will be wasting.
2 – motivational speeches sells you false hope
False hope may have a terrible effect on whatever you’re trying to do, and many motivational speeches feed you false hope.
Let’s say that you are planning to start a business. It would be a great idea to look for some of the success stories in the business industry that you’re trying to be part of.
This way, you’ll be examining the best case scenario if you choose to pursue the business that you have in mind.
Motivational speeches do just that, they sell you a lot of successful stories of people who had nothing, then worked extremely hard in the field that you’re trying to be part of, and then they succeeded and made millions.
You might be asking yourself, why are motivational speeches useless in this case? Isn’t knowing about the success stories a good thing? Well yes and no.
One thing that computer science has taught me was that you always need to also study the worst case scenarios of any decision that you are trying to make.
If you are starting a new business for example, it’s good to read about the success stories, but what’s more important is that you study the failure stories too. It’s important to not just be blindly optimistic about the future and that you make sure to study the reality of things.
Usually, motivational speeches try their best to hide any failure stories because nobody wants to hear about them. Failure stories aren’t interesting to people, thus they are not included in most of the motivational speeches or videos that you will find online
If you watch motivational speeches constantly, you may fall into the trap of only having the best case scenario in mind and not assessing the risks of failing to achieve your goal.
If you want to start a business, you’ll need to know how hard it will be if you fail, will you be able to afford the failure? If not, then you might end up gambling with the future of your life because of a motivational speech that you have just listened to.
Many motivational speeches sell you false hope, they sell you success stories and make you believe that there is no way you can fail. However, trust me there are millions things that can go wrong. This is how real life works. Even people like Elon musk and Jeff bezos still face huge business failures in their lives with all the money and influence that they have
If you are seeking motivation to chase a dream that you have, you’ll need to search for that motivation within yourself.
If you use your inner self to get motivation, that motivation will never fade away as it’s source exists within you all the time. However, if you seek motivation from external sources, you might end up wasting your time as that motivation will fade sooner than you would expect.
