Humor is everywhere around us. It has been around since the existence of human beings. While it’s great to be around humorous people, it’s even better to be a humorous person yourself. But, can you do that? Can humor be taught?
Humor, like most of the other human skills, can be taught. To learn humor, you can surround yourself with humorous people, listen to comedians, practice humor yourself in front of your close friends and so on.
Proof that humor can be taught
I’m not going to dive into research here, but I’ll give you a very simple example from the things that we see around us on a daily basis.
If you are the type of person who would watch the same comedians on different TV shows, then you may have noticed that these people re-use some of their funny stories and jokes.
When you watch them a lot, you begin to notice a lot of patterns and repetitions in the way they approach a joke or a funny story.
This implies that many of the things that these people say that you find funny aren’t coming from them on the spot. Instead, these people have been practicing being funny for so long to make their audience laugh, which means that you too can do the same thing.
With that said, 2 questions remain here
- Why should you learn humor
- How to learn humor
Stick around to know the answers.
Why should you try and learn humor
Humor is an essential part of our lives, as this article suggests, humor can affect your life positively on social, physical, and mental levels.
Whether you are an introvert or an extrovert or somewhere in between, you still need humor in your life and here are some reasons why
1 – It makes you happy
Whether it’s you who is being funny or someone else around you, you will feel the joy and happiness resulting from humor.
A laughter can change your mode and can make you happy. The more you laugh, the better you will feel no matter how much troubles and obstacles you’re currently facing in your life
2 – It makes you feel confident
If you’re the one who is being humorous around people, then you’ll feel much more confident in yourself if they respond well.
The more your audience laughs, the more confidence you’ll have. Your humor might not always work around friends and other people, however when it does, you’ll feel a boost of confidence that is worth all the efforts you’ve put to make people laugh.
3 – Better friendships
We all want to surround ourselves with positive and funny people. If you’re a humorous person, people will love you, and your friends will be closer to you.
Now that we know the importance of humor, how do we practice it?
How can you become a humorous person?
1 – Surround yourself with funny people
If you want to learn humor, you need funny people around you, people that you can learn from, people that will encourage you to throw jokes even though you think they won’t work.
There’s a saying that goes like this “If you’re the smartest person in the room, then you’re in the wrong room”.
The same thing applies here. If you are trying to learn humor and you are the funniest person in the room, then you’re in the wrong room.
So always make sure to surround yourself with humorous people because that will help you learn and grow your sense of humor.
2 – Watch professionals do it
Go to YouTube, and just watch comedians and other humorous people constantly. You’ll see how they act, how they speak, the way they tell stories, their body language and so on.
If you want to be a humorous person, you have to learn from the best.
3 – Practice your humor
No matter how much you learn about being a humorous person, if you don’t practice being funny, then it won’t work.
Try humor around your close friends and keep pushing yourself to improve.
You will fail many times, but you will learn. Even the funniest people on earth have failed a lot to make people laugh at some points in their careers.
Take Kevin Hart as an example. While Kevin is considered one of the most successful stand up comedians today, it wasn’t always the case for him.
Here’s a story about him being hit with a buffalo wing because someone thought he wasn’t funny enough.
What I am saying here is that even professionals can fail to make people laugh sometimes, so don’t worry if your humor does not work from your first attempts and keep trying.
