You probably heard the saying less is more at some point in your life. But what does it really mean? How can less stuff be more?
It sounds ironic at first and you may think that it doesn’t even make sense! However, the more you think about it the more meaning it starts to have. Leading a simple life with less cluttering and things to worry about can make you much more relaxed.
That’s why “less is more” is a motto that many minimalists live by. If you want to have a simple yet beautiful life, minimalism can be your first step on that road. If you’re wondering how to be a minimalist, then this guide is for you.
What is minimalism?
What’s the first thing that pops on your mind when you hear the term minimalism? Some people might think of art, music, architecture, fashion… But what they often miss is that minimalism is also a lifestyle. Lately, the term minimalism has been floating around the Internet and many people became more interested in it.
Minimalism revolves around the idea that we can find contentment in our lives if we focus on less. However, that doesn’t mean you should throw away all your stuff and live like a monk in order to become a minimalist. It’s about eliminating only what’s unnecessary to you from your life. By removing things that don’t add value to your life or bring you joy, you can get a lot of benefits. This includes better financial security, less stress and more quality time with family and friends.
How to be a minimalist
1 – Figure out what matters to you
The first question you need to answer before becoming a minimalist is the following: What’s necessary for me to have a happy life? As we mentioned before, minimalism is about getting rid of what’s unnecessary in your life. But what’s unnecessary to others may be necessary to you. If having a library full of books brings you joy, you don’t need to get rid of your books collection!
Every minimalist has their own lifestyle. Some have kids, some don’t. Some live in tiny houses, and others live in average sized homes. It’s all about your passions and what really matters to you.
2 – Don’t go too far
If we don’t make decisions about what to keep and what to let go of, we’ll end up keeping everything. That’s why letting go of things is necessary for a simpler decluttered life. However, you shouldn’t go too far. If you get rid of things you really need or enjoy, then you’re doing it wrong! Minimalism isn’t deprivation and suffering, it’s meant to make you happier. It should never be about depriving you of the good things that you enjoy.
3 – It’s not only about material things
One big question you need to ask yourself isn’t just about how much stuff you own that doesn’t add value to your life, it’s also about how much time you spend doing things you don’t really care about. How many hours do you spend on social media or watching YouTube videos you don’t even need? Many people suffer from sleep deprivation yet spend hours every day doing useless things instead of increasing their sleep time. One part of minimalism is to also get rid of the non-material stuff that are filling your life without adding value to it. In other words, it’s all about living a more meaningful life.
Happiness can’t be bought. It’s a state of mind that has nothing to do with how much money you have and how much items you can buy. As a matter of fact, you already have everything you need to be happy and content. That’s why sometimes letting go of stuff can help you even more than buying new things. Minimalism helped me change my life. Give it a try and it might help you change yours!
