Should Scientific Research be limited?

Scientific research is what drives innovation and leads to all the advancements that we see today in the medical fields, technological fields, and so much more.

While scientific research is one of the main reasons behind the modern civilizations that we live in today, it can also have some catastrophic effects on the whole world.

With that said, should scientific research be limited?

Some types of scientific research should be limited for the greater good of humanity. Nuclear weapons scientific research can be a great example of how much damage can be done when some scientific research papers reach the wrong hands.

The following are some fields of concern when it comes to scientific research.

1- Nuclear scientific research

Out of all the scientific advancements that our researchers have reached, nuclear advancement can be considered the most dangerous of them all.

It all started in 1938 in Berlin, Germany. A discovery was made that later became the foundation of the atomic bomb.

The results of that scientific research in the nuclear physics field led to the creation of the strongest military weapon of our recorded history.

As you may have already know, Japan was the first country that was bombed using nuclear weapons. Tens of thousands of lives were lost. 

The tragedy of the nuclear explosion is one of the main reasons why scientific research should be limited in some fields.

While nuclear power has some positive outcomes for countries in terms of power production, it can also be the cause of human extinction one day in the future.

Albert Einstein, one of the greatest scientists of our time, once said that he does not know what weapons are going to be used during world war 3, however, what he knows is that world war 4 will be fought with sticks and stones.

If a third world war occurs any time soon, and if nuclear weapons were involved, then the whole world would be in a deep danger.

This is all caused by the discovery of nuclear power.

2- Artificial Intelligence Research

Artificial intelligence(AI) is a term used to describe a field of science that aims to give machines the ability to think intelligently like a normal human would do.

Many AI scientists claim that Artificial Intelligence is not dangerous and it still has a long way to go before it becomes even close to a fraction of human intelligence. Other figures like Elon Musk for example claim that AI is a huge danger to the world.

Elon Musk even claims that AI is more dangerous than nuclear power.

He says that if humans decide to proceed with AI, then they need to be very careful.

Although a lot of AI scientists claim that AI in its current state is not dangerous at all. Some scientists claim that the term intelligence is very exaggerated when it comes to machines because machines with AI still have a lot of limitations.

Whether or not AI is a true danger to the human race, there is no doubt that scientists need to be careful about how they approach it.

3- Space exploration

Space exploration is a controversial topic. Some people support space exploration and sending crafts to nearby moons and planets while other people believe that resources shouldn’t be wasted on space exploration and should be used instead to fix problems on Earth.

What kind of limits should be put on scientific research?

Since scientific research is extremely important for the development of our nations in many fields, any limitations put on scientific research should be thought out very well.

Take nuclear research for example. You can’t just allow anyone to be a nuclear scientist.

Nuclear research should be supervised by governments. It already is, and that’s a good thing. 

If every person was able to create an atomic bomb and do further research concerning nuclear power, then the chances of the human extinction will be high.

Limiting research in the nuclear field so that it can only be done under the supervision of governments does not prevent the advancement in scientific research and discovery. It just makes sure that nuclear power does not fall into the wrong hands.

Same thing applies for many other scientific research fields. If scientists do not want to stop when their research can hurt millions of people, then they should at least make sure that their discoveries are put in the right hands.
