To many people, Elon Musk is a genius visionary who was able to build companies that affected the whole world. His electric cars company Tesla disrupted the entire cars industry and pushed most of the existing car companies towards producing electric cars. His rockets company SpaceX is also achieving wonders in the world of rockets manufacturing. However, there’s a crazy side to Elon Musk that makes him sometimes look like a madman. But even when his actions seem crazy, they usually end up beneficial for him.
Free advertisement and viral marketing
During the famous Cybertruck reveal in 2019, the supposedly unbreakable glass of the truck broke when trying to demonstrate its strength.
Some people claimed that this was staged so that Elon would get free marketing through the memes! This wouldn’t be surprising, since Elon was already famous in the meme community. If you’ve ever been on Reddit, you’d notice that Elon Musk has a good share of memes there. As a matter of fact, Elon himself is a memes fan and had participated in PewDiePie’s meme review series before.
However, Elon later explained why the Cybertruck’s windows actually broke. It was due to hitting the door with a sledgehammer earlier during the presentation. But whether breaking the glass was intentional or not, it worked as a clever piece of guerrilla marketing and thousands of people pre-ordered their Cybertruck afterwards.
How to make people listen
In September 2018, Elon Musk smoked marijuana on “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast and caused Tesla stocks to drop around 9 percent in a single day.
At first, this may seem really crazy and unintentional. However, Elon is a calculated and incredibly intelligent person. If he just wanted to smoke weed he could’ve easily done it at home. What he wanted was smoking it on camera. There are many reasons for that, one of which is that he knew this controversial move would make more people listen to the entire podcast which was around 2 hours long. He wanted people to hear what he had to say and he clearly accomplished that objective by making sure this podcast went viral.
Elon also knew that it’s perfectly legal to smoke that type of joint in California. So technically, he wasn’t doing anything wrong. One more thing to notice is that Elon smoked after Rogan told him he may not be able to because of stockholders. This means that he wanted to give people the message that he’s his own man and he’s not trying to adhere to some CEO template.
The crazy tweets
Once again, Elon drove Tesla stocks down yesterday with a series of crazy tweets.
Tesla stocks dropped $15 instantly after the tweet, and then $30 after one hour of the tweet being posted. People who have stocks in Tesla went crazy since they were losing thousands of dollars.
Was this another display of the crazy side of Elon Musk or did the man have another motive behind it? The image isn’t clear yet because it’s only been a day since he posted the tweet. However, it may turn out to be one of Elon’s smart moves.
Regardless of the outcomes of this tweet, we can safely say that Elon Musk is a manifestation of the quote: “No great mind has ever existed without a touch of madness”.
