When Tim Berners-Lee first created the World Wide Web, what he had in mind was simply a way to share information. He didn’t imagine it as a money-making machine, yet that’s how it turned out. Throughout the years, it became very clear that the Internet was a disruptive power that would change business and the way we live. More people hopped on the train of online business, and it gave hope to many small businesses that were struggling to combat the huge corporations.
What’s special about doing business online is that you have more exposure. The Internet acts as a global marketplace by connecting buyers and sellers around the entire world. Businesses, especially the small ones, are no longer bound by their local market. Everyone can sell anything to any country they want! In addition to that, you don’t need a huge budget to start.
You can start small
Before the Internet, the success of a business depended largely on its physical presence. Generally, the bigger its presence was, the more chance it had to be successful. Nowadays, anyone can create an online store and start selling goods, services, handmade items, or anything they have in mind. People no longer need a large number of employees to process the orders and paperwork, because the computer will do most of these things for them. I have a friend who started selling handmade items on Instagram, and now she’s making a living out of it. If it weren’t for the power of the Internet, people wouldn’t get the exposure they need to start such small businesses.
Competing with the giants
One thing to keep in mind is that just having an online business doesn’t mean you’ll instantly become successful. There are hundreds of other online businesses, and there are giant companies that are selling online. This means that you also need to have a vision that makes you special in order to succeed. You need to give customers an incentive to make them choose you over others. This incentive could be a lower price, better quality, better customer service, faster and cheaper delivery, or even all of them combined!
If you’re planning on starting an online business, now is the time! As long as you put your heart into it, there’s always a chance that it becomes very successful. You’re no longer bound by size or budget. The Internet gave us opportunities, and now it’s up to us to take them.
