To act or not to act, is that the question?

Mr. Robot: Tell me one thing, Elliot. Are you a one or a zero? That’s the question you have to ask yourself. Are you a yes or a no? Are you going to act or not?

Elliot: Yo… You’ve been staring at a computer screen way too long, homie. Life’s not that binary.

Mr. Robot: Isn’t it? Sure, there are greys but when you come right down to it, at its core, beneath every choice, there’s either a one or a zero. You either do something or you don’t. You walk out that door, you’ve decided to do nothing, to say no, which means you do not come back. You leave, you are no longer a part of this. You become a zero. If you stay, if you want to change the world, you become a yes. You become a one. So, I’ll ask you again: are you a one or a zero?

MR. ROBOT – Season 1 Episode 2 – Ones and Zeroes

Every day in our life, we face situations in which we need to decide whether to act or not to act. Whether we should do something or not. For Mr. Robot, the good choice is being a one, to act. A one is a yes, and “yes” is the right choice in order to change the world. A zero, on the other hand, represents the passive person who does nothing beneficial. However, this is not always the case. A YES in the wrong place can cause disasters!

Sometimes, you need to say NO

You should have priorities in your life. And sometimes, you need to choose something over another. If your family is a priority, you should say no to anything that could take away the time you spend with them. An example of doing this is by reducing the time you spend on social media. No matter how much time you spend on Twitter or Facebook trying to spread your opinions or change the world, it will never be enough. So why don’t you take some rest, stop acting, and spend some time with the people that really matter to you. If you keep saying “yes” to social media, it might end up ruining the special connection you have with the people you care about. This is only one of many examples where saying “no” is better.

Everyone should ask themselves if they are a one or a zero. If they want to do or not to do, to act or not to act. However, we must keep in mind that being a one in every situation is not the right choice. We might want to change the world, to help others, to always be a “yes”; but we also deserve some time for ourselves, to be a “no” and have some rest. Our life must be composed of ones and zeroes in order to have a meaning. As a result, we should refine the question that is being asked, and we must ask ourselves: “When should I be a one, and when should I be a zero?”
